Foot reflex zone massage

Kesselring A

Institut fur Pflegeforschung, Bern.

Foot reflexology is defined as massage of zones on the feet which correspond

to different parts of the body. A medline-search yielded no literature in

the field of foot reflexology. Indications for and results of foot

reflexology have been extrapolated from case-descriptions and two pilot

studies with small samples. One study (Lafuente et al.) found foot

reflexology to be as helpful to patients with headaches as medication

(flunarizine), yet foot reflexology was fraught with less side-effects than

medication. In a second study (Eichelberger et al.) foot reflexology was

used postoperatively on gynecological patients. The intervention group

showed a lesser need for medication to enhance bladder tonus than did the

control group. The literature describes foot reflexology as enhancing

urination, bowel movements and relaxation.

Treating type II diabetes mellitus with foot reflexotherapy

Wang XM

First Teaching Hospital, Beijing Medical University.

32 cases of type II diabetes mellitus were randomly divided into two groups.

One group was treated with conventional Western medicine hypoglycemic agent)

plus foot reflexotherapy (FR), the other group with the same medicine only.

After 30 days' treatment, fasting blood glucose levels, platelet

aggregation, length and wet weight of the thrombus, senility symptom scores

and serum lipid peroxide (LPO) were greatly reduced in FR group (P <

0.05-0.01), while no significant change was observed in the WM group. The

study suggested that foot reflexotherapy was an effective treatment for type

II diabetes mellitus.

Budapest physicians practicing alternative medicine (based on a September

1991 survey)

Gyukits G, Koltay E

Miskolci Egyetem, Szociologiai Tanszek Neprajzi Muzeum, Budapest.

Our essay is the first attempt to raise the problems related to the

Hungarian alternative medicine and to outline the tendencies in this field.

In our research we tried to find answers to the following questions: 1.

whether the physicians in disadvantageous position show a greater tendency

to start dealing with alternative medicine, in order to make up for their

low income; 2. to what extent can the appearance of the alternative

practitioners on the market be regarded as a practice aimed merely at

acquiring the maximum income; 3. we wanted to know the opinion of the

physicians in connection with the regulation of alternative medicine, and 4.

whether the cast of mind interiorized at the university can place the

physicians into a disadvantageous position, as contrasted to those

alternative practitioners who do not possess a university degree, because

the physicians, just owing to the assumption of specific values, may be

ousted from certain areas of the market. Twenty-eight alternative

practitioners having physician certificate were interviewed, all of them

being residents in Budapest, by means of telephone conversations. Owing to

the small number of the questioned persons, our results represent merely the

tendencies. Based on the acquired data, a negative answer must be given to

the first question: that means, at the time of conducting the survey,

alternative medicine can not be regarded as a form of finding a way out for

the physicians in disadvantageous position.

General practitioners' assessment of and interest in alternative medicine in

Canada.

Verhoef MJ, Sutherland LR

Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of

Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Canadian physicians' opinions about alternative medicine have, as yet, not

been assessed. The objectives of this pilot study were to assess general

practitioners': (1) desired involvement in alternative medicine; (2)

perceived demand for alternative medicine; and (3) beliefs about the

efficacy of different alternative approaches. The study design was a

cross-sectional survey of 400 randomly selected Alberta and Ontario general

practitioners. Of the 384 eligible physicians, 200 (52%) completed the

questionnaire. Seventy-three percent of physicians felt that they should

have some knowledge about the most important alternative treatments.

However, with respect to other issues, physicians desired less involvement

with alternative medicine. Sixty-five percent perceived a demand for

alternative medicine from their patients, in particular chiropractic.

Alternative medicine was perceived to be needed most for musculoskeletal

problems and chronic pain or illness. Chiropractic, hypnosis and acupuncture

(for chronic pain) were believed to be most efficacious, while homeopathy

and reflexology were considered to be least efficacious. Undergraduate,

graduate clinical and continuing medical education will need to address

alternative treatments in order to provide physicians with up-to-date and

relevant information.

Diabet Med 11: 210-213 (1994)

Diabetes and alternative medicine: cause for concern.

Gill GV, Redmond S, Garratt F, Paisey R

Diabetes Centre, Walton Hospital, Liverpool, UK.

'Alternative' medicines are becoming increasingly popular, and in this paper

we describe our experience with alternative approaches to orthodox diabetes

management. Four patients with insulin-dependent diabetes reduced or stopped

their insulin in favour of therapeutic approaches including prayer, faith

healing, unusual diets, and supplements of vitamins and trace elements. This

resulted in ketoacidosis in three, in one case life-threatening; and weight

loss and hyperglycaemia in the other. One patient developed serious

retinopathy. Additionally, eight other types of alternative diabetic

treatment are described, not as far as we know associated with such serious

complications. These include homeopathy, reflexology, meditation, herbal

treatment, 'cellular nutrition', 'subconscious healing', 'pearl therapy'

(drinking milk in which pearls have been boiled) and 'astrotherapy' (typing

pieces of coral around the arm). Diabetes is a chronic incurable disease,

for which modern treatments remain somewhat unsatisfactory. It is therefore

perhaps not surprising that some patients seek alternative treatments with

more attractive claims. Diabetes health professionals need to be aware of

the potential dangers associated with some of these treatments.
