Knowledge of Reflexology Research

Knowledge of research adds to a reflexologists' credibility, demonstrating your knowledge and professional skills to whomever you're talking whether it's a friend, family member, a prospective client, a fellow professional or a medical professional. Such knowledge and the ability to convey it sells your reflexology services for you. Also, to your client, it illustrates the value of the reflexology service being provided. If you're not aware that research has documented the worth of reflexology, your client won't be either.

Here are some reflexology research facts:

  • A single foot reflexology session makes a difference. Austrian research demonstrated that blood flow to the kidney improves in a single session. The researchers further showed the same for blood flow to the intestines.
  • Hand reflexology has right-now, real-time impact. Research from Singapore show that application of technique to the hands' brain reflex area creates a brain wave pattern of relaxation.
  • A 10-minute hand reflexology session makes a difference in a health concern. Research from
  • Korea showed that a 10-minute, five day a week for 5 weeks hand reflexology workout brought about significant differences in areas of importance for kidney dialysis patients.
  • Self-help foot rolling creates change. A 20-minute electric foot roller workout changed three parameters of cardiac function in study participants. (Singapore)
  • Reflexology makes a real time, right now difference. Results were immediate to ease symptoms resulting from chemotherapy following a ten-minute session in one study and a thirty-minute session in another.
  • Self-foot reflexology can produce results. Applied for 30 minutes, three times a week for 4 weeks, it was shown to be an effective method for reducing urinary incontinence symptoms and daily life discomfort. (Korea)
  • Also, daily self-help foot reflexology for 6 weeks reduced depression and stress responses, as well as strengthened the immune system in middle-aged women. (Korea)
  • How-to

Hone your skills at accessing Internet reflexology research. If a client or prospective client expresses interest in a particular health concern, know where to go to get information about the efficacy of reflexology as found in research and applied to that concern.

    Enhancing Your Foot Reflexology Services

Among skills that add to reflexology services, reading the feet can add credibility to your work. Such skill demonstrates that something real is going on when you work on a client's feet or a potential client's feet. Learning about stress cues on the feet, how to recognize them and apply technique to change them, makes your reflexology services more real to the client. Take pictures of the stress cue(s) and show how they change from session to session. Instructions with color pictures is provide in the Kunz & Kunz work The Complete Guide Foot Reflexology (Third Edition) .

Offering Self-Help Reflexology Skills for Client Information and Classes

Consumers are now seeking to make up for what they've lost in the faltering economy: their health care safety net. The loss of a job means loss of health care benefits. A tighter budget translates into consumers who are cutting back on expenses including prescription medication, especially the elderly and retired. Yet, in spite of economic set backs, health continues to be an issue for all. And, reflexology can help meet those needs.

A September 24, 2008 Wall Street Journal article noted the cut backs in purchase of prescription medicine. Once thought to be an ever growing market, sales of medicine have declined as consumers cut back to save money. One example was a Florida retiree who can no longer afford her medication for acid reflux and asthma. While one's heart certainly goes out to anyone in such a position, this author's immediate thought was: Hey! Reflexology's helped me out with (and taken care of) both those problems. It's too bad this woman doesn't know about reflexology.

And it's here's where opportunity comes in for reflexologists. One growing market consists of the individuals who have health needs but who have been dealt out of the deck as far as health insurance is concerned. By teaching self-help reflexology and family reflexology to individuals, groups and families, the smart reflexologist can meet the needs of this growing market and earn some money at the same time. The reflexologist can realize an economic benefit and the consumer can meet at least some health care needs.

Loss or limited access to medical care doesn't mean that the consumer has to abandon hope in taking care of health needs. The anxiety of facing health concerns is perhaps the most stressful part of the situation. By fully investigating what one can do to meet his or her needs as well as that of the family, one can take control and lessen the stress of the situation. And, reflexology provides such an opportunity.

For the reflexologist who has invested in reflexology education, building a career and keeping an office, branching out to meet the needs of such consumers provides business opportunities. Potential businesses include: the self-help session, the self-help class and the family-help class.

To sharpen your skills in this area, consider reflexology research and how it relates to people who want to help a loved one. Examples include:

  • Post traumatic stress disorder: soldiers returning from a war zone, children who have experienced community violence, birth mothers who have experienced a difficult labor
  • Cancer patients
  • Hospice care
  • Hemodialysis patients
  • Expectant mothers
  • Client self help instruction

Educating the client about self-help reflexology techniques and information adds value to a reflexologist's services. The application of self-help techniques speeds up the progress towards the client's healthful goals. The client more quickly and economically graduates to reaching goals in addition to learning how to maintain health through his or her own self-help efforts. The reflexologist benefits from the resulting goodwill of the client. As any reflexologist knows, word-ofmouth recommendation from a satisfied client is the best way to win new clientele. Have self-help books available to lend or sell to the client.

    The do-it-yourself session

Offer a session where the client learns how to approach his or her health concern with a self applied reflexology strategy. Or, it could be teaching how to work with a family member's health concern. In addition to teaching techniques, you'll want to work with the individual to develop a strategy for how-long-and-how-often technique should be applied to see results. Have small reflexology charts and the self-help tool, golf balls on hand to give as part of the service. This added value makes your service more memorable, builds good will and helps develop word-ofmouth advertising for you business.

This is actually a standard part of our reflexology practice. For those who are interested, we teach the reflexology chart and demonstrate how to get results by using self help techniques and strategies. We fondly remember one client who came in with an asthma problem that was beginning to defy medications. We had mentioned a five-minute application of technique. She came back in and proudly announced that she achieved results - in three minutes. She brought family members in and we worked on strategies for their health concerns. She eventually "graduated" as we say. She had learned how to use reflexology for her health problems and those of her family.

    The do-it-yourself reflexology class

As above but working with a group of people. Consider doing this with a family group, a group of friends or any group such as a book club. Offer to teach techniques and strategies for health concerns. As a bonus, provide a reflexology session to each family member or member of the group. As above, have small reflexology charts and golf balls available. Bring reflexology books along for their information and have them available for sale.

    Learn how-to apply self-help reflexology

If you haven't used self-help reflexology yourself, now's the time to start. Applying technique to one's self is different for many reasons. Finding the time and developing the frequency and duration strategy that results in success is another area for education. Finally, work at it. Get some results from your own self-help work. Get further experience by working with family and friends.

Learn about self-help reflexology yourself. Become familiar with techniques and their application. Use the short cut of buying and studying a book with self-help information. Next, choose a personal health concern to address through self-help. Use self-help techniques to achieve results and then to maintain your results. Try your new-found knowledge on family and friends, getting practice at helping others reach health goals through self-help. Now you're ready to advise clients and add value to your reflexology services.

    Tip

A basket of golf balls on hand in your office can turn into an economical yet valued gift for your clients. The golf ball is a perfect hand reflexology self-help tool. It's cheap, easy-to-learn and easy-to-use. Demonstrate its use for your client and then give him or her one to take home and use. Golf balls are inexpensive to buy, cheap at yard sales or free if you have a golf-playing friend.

    Offering Hand Reflexology Services

Hand reflexology services increase in value with the passing of every day. Research documents the beneficial aspects of hand reflexology. In addition, more and more individuals are in need of services that make their hands feel better. Numbers are increasing for the ranks of those who are computer keyboard over-users or those whose hands are feeling the effect of advancing age. Hand reflexology can help the mobility of senior citizen's hands.

    How-to

Learn hand reflexology. Take a class or pick up a book. Start practicing on family and friends. When you feel proficient enough, move on to a paying clientele.

Books available at Amazon.com include: (1) Hand Reflexology (Kunz & Kunz, Dorling Kindersley, 2005) (2) Hand Reflexology Workbook (Kunz & Kunz, RRP Press, 1999)

    Tip

After you've worked on one of the individual's hands during a session, pause a moment and ask the client to flex his or her fingers to feel the difference between the worked hand and the unworked hand.

Teaching Foot Reflexology to Individuals or Groups

Teach an individual or group of individuals how to work with a significant other's feet. Research has demonstrated the value of partner reflexology, a spouse, relative, or friend applying reflexology to a loved one's feet. Partner reflexology, for example, has been researched and found to be beneficial in helping cancer patients cope with the side effects of chemotherapy. Further research shows that both family members and cancer patients appreciate such work. (See below.) For the expectant mother, reflexology can provide a bit of relaxation plus there's lots of anecdotal and research evidence to show the benefits of reflexology. With research demonstrating the benefits of self-help and partner reflexology, learning reflexology has become a valued skill.

Be the entertainment for a party, working with each individual at a social event in the background as people socialize and visit. Of course, you'll be distributing small reflexology charts with your name and number to enhance the possibility of new clients.

Make your reflexology services the life of the party. Among ideas listed by Kelly Wearstler, "one of Los Angeles's hippest interior designers when asked "How do you inject some fun into a party," she replied "ŠAnd for a very luxurious party, I'll hire someone to do reflexology on guests' feet in a cabana filled with candies and lots of pillows for lounging."

Mother Get Togethers / Play Dates

Give both mothers and children a reflexology treat. For mothers of infants and children, the play date provides a chance to visit with others going through the same experiences and to let the children play with others. By offering your services, you'll add reflexology's benefits to those of the socializing opportunity for mothers and kids. To consider the benefits for mothers and children,

    Spa Party

Theme your party offerings. A spa theme fits into the pampering mode for the birthday girl, expectant mother or soon-to-be bride. Pair up with a manicurist, pedicurist or cosmetologist to offer a complete mini-spa experience.

The increasing popularity of spas has resulted in the delivery of spa services to the location of your choice. On the day of the (bachelorette) party, MobileSpa transformed a room in Ms. Maynard's Nashua, NH, home into an Asian-style resort, decorated with vibrant colors, candles, a feng shui fountain and a smoke-mist fountain. As Bach played, the 10 guests chatted, sipped Chardonnay, soaked their feet and had their nails manicured. Each guest left with a gift basket of chocolates, cookies and flavored coffee, which was part of the MobileSpa package. The total cost was $600." Š "Many mobile spas are individual businesses, dispatching uniformed, licensed technicians to provide reflexology , massages, manicures, pedicures and facial, and even food, at homes, hotel rooms, companies and health clubs. Often they are tapped for parties and other special occaisions."(Osuyoka, "Spas Are Offering Home Delivery," Wall Street Journal , November 23, 2004, p. D9)

    Baby Shower

Then there's the specialty parties. The baby shower is the newest place for reflexology as it joins spa services provided to entertain guests. The winner of a babyGap contest and her guests experienced reflexology, a pedicure and massage at "the ultimate baby shower" held at Four Seasons Manhattan with Asian theme buffet and scrapbook making activities. ("Ideas flood in for baby showers," January 24, 2006) (Feb 2006)

    Here-Comes-the-Bride

Provide entertainment at a bridal shower. Or, on wedding day, provide before-the wedding and avoid-the-jitters reflexology services. Provide after-the-wedding and my feet-are-killing-me services. (We've actually done this at family weddings.) You might work with a wedding planner or a church's wedding organizer to find clientele. A Martha Stewart Wedding magazine featured a story showing reflexology for brides.

    Reflexology Party

Just as Tupperware parties are organized by individuals, offer reflexology services and products to such an organized group. Reflexology books and products available at a discount and offer a money-making opportunity. For example, Amazon.com offers a 40% discount for the purchase of one book or any number of books. Shipping is free for purchases over $25. Selling the book at its full retail price gives you a profit. Party participants seeking to give the gift of health for Christmas may offer a perfect opportunity to sell books, charts, your sessions or a gift certificate for a session.

Making available and selling reflexology books, charts and kits provides information and adds to the reflexologist's income with a small investment. Whether it's clients, class members or demonstration attendees, the accessibility of reflexology books and charts allows them to take home an educational tool to practice self-help reflexology or to gain education in reflexology. Many clients like to add books to their health resource libraries for future reference. Also, as clients see results with reflexology and become more enthusiastic, they want to tell others about it and a book helps them tell the story.

Having books available for sale also provides the opportunity for the client to buy a gift for someone else. Giving the gift of a reflexology book enables the client to help others. Selling such materials in the reflexologist's office provides to the client one-stop-shop for his or her reflexology and gift-giving needs.

    How-to

Use the Internet and buy books at a discount for resale at full retail price.

Amazon.com offers a 40% discount. To avoid shipping charges, order more than $25 in books.

    Tip

Maintain a "lending library" of reflexology books. Lend a book out to a client with a Post-It to draw attention to techniques relevant to the client's interest. You may be surprised how many books end up being purchased and finding a new home.

    by Barbara and Kevin Kunz

Show something happens (See also "Enhancing Your Foot Reflexology Skills.")

Whether you're providing a session or a demonstration, this strategy works well to show the client that something good happened thanks to your work. After you've worked on one foot, get your client up and walking for a few steps. This way he or she can see how good the "worked on" foot feels in comparison to the non-worked foot. (Thanks to reflexologist Gwen Dara for this excellent tip.)

    Call the day after

Call a new client the day after his or her first appointment to see how he or she is doing. Did the client feel relaxed afterwards? Have other observations?

Give away's for your clients or a demonstration audience

Enhance your service by giving your clients the gift of reflexology information or a self-help tool. Clients react with great pleasure to the gift of a foot and/or hand reflexology chart (see above), a golf ball as a self-help tool or even a reflexology book.

    Golf balls

When you teach your clients self-help techniques (see below), demonstrate its use for your client and then give him or her one to take home and use. Clients act very favorably. Acquiring golf balls can be cheap and easy. A friend or family member may have golf balls you can pick up for free. Garage sales, flea markets and golf ranges are other sources of inexpensive golf balls. Check the golf balls for wear. Golf balls with nicks are not comfortable to use. Golf balls with faded paint are not attractive.

    Reflexology books

The cost of a reflexology book given to a client or potential client for free can be a good investment on your part. (See below for information on buying books at a discount.) Consider your possible return income for the $10 investment. It can be worth it specially if: your services are on the upper end, you make house calls for which you charge more (see below) or the client has bought a series of sessions (see below).

Offer a series of sessions at a discount

Offering a series of sessions at a discounted price serves multiple purposes. It gives the client a break financially as well as increasing your income potential. It can help encourage long-time clients to stay with you. One reflexologist we know gives long time clients a free session for every two paid sessions. A discounted series of sessions also encourages the client to come back for a sufficient number of sessions to get results from your reflexology work. One reflexologist we heard of actually made this a requirement of some clients for this very reason

    Offer gift certificates

Offer gift certificates for your services. For the gift-giver, the gift of reflexology offers an opportunity to give gift that's a health benefit. For the expectant mother, the post-partum woman, or someone recovering from surgery, for example, benefits of reflexology are demonstrated by research. In addition, relaxation is a well-researched and documented benefit of reflexology. A reflexology session is a thoughtful gift for the stressed worker, for example.

    Tip

Personalize and print the gift certificate for your services. This way the gift giver has a tangible present to give. Make the gift even more special by visiting the office supply store and picking up specialty stationery. "Happy birthday," "Merry Christmas" and other stationery is available with envelopes to make the gift certificate more special.

    Make house calls

Add house calls to your reflexology business.

Many up-scale clientele prefer that services come to them. A friend who had lived in up-scale Santa Fe gave us this tip. Consider your travel time and driving expenses and adjust your rates accordingly.

Another alternative is to offer reflexology services to several individuals at one stop at a discounted price per individual. Also, if you are providing services within a small community such as a retirement village or apartment house, you can offset your travel time and costs.

    Become a specialist reflexologist

Consider your possible markets that reflect your reflexology experience or area of interest. (See above.) Find possible groups that would serve as clients.

For example, one senior we knew provided reflexology sessions within his retirement community in Florida and was kept busy. He marketed to seniors seeking a little company and the touch of a reflexology session.

Offer the mother and baby. Provide reflexology services to both. Teach the new mother how to work on the little one and how to use self-help techniques to deal with her own stress. Take a look at research for post natal mothers and babies to enhance your knowledge.
