>My girlfriend is a reflexologist
>and has been treating her sister who is about 4 1/2 months pregnant. Her
>midwife told her that reflexology should not be administered over the
>uterus as this can bring on contractions. Is this true? Her sister was
>complaining of pain due to her uterus stretching and when the treatment
>was over her pain had gone altho they did notice that the baby did move
>quite a bit while working over the uterus area.Any info regarding this
>matter would be greatly appreciated.
I have no evidence to this effect. Reflexology is like exercise. It should be done gradually and within her sister's comfort range. Ask the midwife where she received her information. You also didn't say whether her sister had contractions after the session.
I have to advise you that there is an association in England which doesn't allow work within the first trimester. But even they do not prohibit it after that. I have heard this rumor for years but I have no way to verify it since no one has produce evidence either way. I would however caution to go slow if there has been any history of unstable pregnancies. And you can also check with her doctor. [top]

>I have a client who has Mortons Neuroma is there something I can do for
>her? Or something I should not be doing?
You shouldn't be treating for a specific disorder. That is against the law. They should be referred to medical if they haven't sought it already.
That said by relaxing the foot you can help with the pressure. You can help by gently working around the metatarsal heads and gently moving them up and down.Never cause pain of any significance. Also defer to medical help and you should be alright. [top]

...when I do one client the opposite foot responds to where the
>problem is on the body,e.g. her right foot picks up the neck problem that
>is on her left side of the neck, can you explain this?
There is in our estimation about a 10% crossover of the nerves. Also when you reach the head and neck there is the decussation of the spinal nerves which means the nerves cross directly over. See Complete Guide to Foot Reflexology (Revised 1993).

>I am a student studying in Singapore and I am doing a project on foot
>reflexology. I have visited your webite and have found it very useful for
>my project. I would like to ask you 2 question: 1)What foot reflexology
>products are good? 2)Are foot reflexology products really useful?
1) There are a wide variety of reflexology products. I think foot rollers are quite useful for both general relaxation and breaking up the pattern of stress that forms during the day. I think that vibration is good for the foot as is heat and cold. So foot baths and vibrating foot platforms can be quite useful.
2) I consider reflexology products to be self help devices. They are good for relaxation and supplementing regular reflexology sessions. If applied consistently they can quite helpful particularly if applied with a program developed by a practitioner. They won't replace the human hand for it's ability to manipulate a hand or foot. But they can be quite relaxing which relaxation has been directly linked to illness and disease.
I am the same way. when I roll my feet at night I get a much better sleep. There are a myraid of rollers. I plan to review them on the site. There are from free to cheap to very expensive foot rollers.
It is really a matter of taste and your budget. A simple free roller is a couple of golf balls dropped into an old sock. Tie a knot and you have a pretty good roller. (The sock keeps them from shooting away.) then there are the cylinder rollers that have ribbing that are inexpensive yet fairly effective. Usually made of wood they are available in health food stores to department stores. There are innovative rollers like Joel Swartz's roller which is a cylinder but has nubs on it. (face.com) Then you have the electric series which roll automatically. You just stick your feet on them. Here mottors are a critical issue. A cheap motor won't last long and so it is worth paying more for the durability. We carry a roller that is quite expensive but we have had one that is used daily for 8 years. Try http://www.reflexology-research.com/gift.htm It might give you some ideas. [top]

>agian, is there any reflexology technique that can help with ovulaton?
>or fertility in any way?If there is I would appreciate the info or where

There are two I recommend. The golf ball technique is described on http://www.reflexology-research.com/golfball.html and rotating on a point as described in Hand and Foot Reflexology: A Self Help Guide. Perhaps I can find time to put up a page on fertility. [top]

I am new to reflexology and trying to learn all
>I can. Theinformation I am looking for is, has there ever been any
>studies on reflexology on someone who is paralyxed from the neck, chest,
>or waist down. I used to run a support group for people with
>disabilaties and have lots of friends in wheel chairs. I'm searching

>some one who is paralyzed.
We did a limited study on reflexology a few years ago. We think it is of great benefit. Particularly pay attention to the eye/ear area. There are limited studies on paralysis but not enough. I will be glad to answer any questions you have. I will put our study up for you at http://www.reflexology-research.com

Have you tried Anatomical Chart Company http://www.anatomical.com/anatomical/index.html? They did carry them. I have also seen them in countless catalogs and on the Internet. Try searching through http://www.dogpile.com - I get pretty good results. [top]

>I am looking for a book in Spanish on Reflexlogy. Could you please let me
>know if you have such a book and all the information, like the cost and
>shipping charge?
We have two titles in Spanish Hand and Foot Reflexology: A Self Help Guide and Hand Reflexology Workbook. The only way I know to order Spanish books is to go to your local health food store and see if they buy their books through Nutribooks, a distributor. Then see about a special order. They should have Nutribook's catalog and can look up Spanish titles for you.

>I'm a new student to reflexology with a question. I have a friend who seems
>to be constantly suffering from various colds and ailments. Are there any
>pressure points either on the hand or feet that can assist her in
>strengthening her immune system? From what I've read, it appears that the
>Adrenal Glands may help?
Adrenal glands are the key glands to break those type of patterns. Get her to try the golf ball technique. see http://www.reflexology-research.com/golfball.html A friend of mine swears it is necessary to stay with this technique for two weeks to break up a pattern.
There are the rest of the endocrine glands which you can work for her. Also try the thymus which is just below the throat on the inside, bottom of the foot. It may be a bright white area after applying pressure.
I also like to work the kidneys a lot. The lack of elimination often causes a stress on the system which tests the immune system. [top]

I am not sure what certification you are taking so my advice may not be of help. But I like the anatomy coloring books. They help me visualize relationships. And they often have interesting facts. Hope this helps.

>breasts? My wife has breast cancer (left one) and I have been working on
>the liver and colon pretty good, along with the other parts of course.
>She is taking the natural route in trying to heal this cancer.
The breast in our system would overlay with the chest and lungs according to reiterative theory. Try the top of the foot between the toughs observing for sensitivity or hard areas. Also check on top of the foot at the base of the big toe. See if there are any hard areas there. [top]

>If there are no laws governing Reflexology does that mean that I could
>practice there??
>I also hope to be able to do Aromatherapy as well - so what is the problem
>with the massage laws??
If there are no laws governing it you should be able to practice there. The problem is usually the interpretation of the massage laws.
The problem with the massage laws is that they are "touching ordinances" meant to combat prostitution. Any touching of a human body is included.I don't know a thing about the legal status of aromatherapy

...can you explain to me why we have to make the parents to
>sign a statement to the effect that we have to informed them that they
>should consult a doctor concerning the health of their child?
>why, I means is that to uncovered us, but in which case, or maybe because
>the law looks at us as just a therapy to relax and maintain well being?
>actually I haven`t got the clue, have you?
Not sure who is advising you. I think there are questions regarding disclaimers. I always advise peole to seek medical help for an undiagnosed problem. We are a therapy to promote well being. We aren't entrusted to be primary medical personnel. It is because the state has a concern that we will keep people from proper medical care and that could endanger them. A disclaimer only reinforces that. [top]

>do you know why might some women actually find it painful to wear flat shoe?
>Is that something has to do with their periods or something like that?
Doubt it. It more has to do with shoe design based on fashion not anatomy. It can be because of overuse of high heels. When a woman switches to flats the calf muscles have shorten. Calf muscles act to pull the foot flat and cause the foot muscles to contract to try to maintain any arch. Vicious cycle.

Sorry our search revealed no matches to those terms. However there is some literature on other neurological problems which is encouraging.
Can you tell me the appearance of the big toe? 1) Is the nail fully formed or is it thick or unusual in appearance? When you look at the underside of the toe is there "bubbles" or white areas that stand out? 3) Press on the toe for a few seconds. Does 'bubbles" or white areas now appear? 4) Are there stringy looking areas on the sides of the toe?
I noticed a discussion on reflexology on the autism forum about what a calmative it can be even when applied by amateurs. I have also worked with a brain injury center which uses it routinely with their clients. [top]

>My wife is pregnant (33 weeks) and has pain in her pelvis and lower back. Is
>there any spot on her foot which can help? I have heard that the outside of
>the foot, by the ankle can cause contractions.
There is an acupuncture point there that is supposed to be associated with spontaneous abortion. But in 25 years we haven't had a verified case of this happening. But some reflexology associations ( to our dismay) do not work on woman in the first trimester.
There are several areas on the foot that can help- see http://www.reflexology-research.com/Images/foot.jpeg.
Be gentle. Go slowly at first. Be aware of her comfort level. Traction can be very relaxing. with pregnant women almost any application can be helpful.
