Hello,

I am the director of the Tampa Institute of Massage and Bodywork. We also have a nail and skin care school attached to our program and this has brought up a question that I am having trouble getting a good answer for. Hopefully this is where you can help. In the past the former owner contracted with a woman to give a reflexology seminar several times a year to nail and skin care students. Under Florida law you must first be a licensed massage therapist then obtain additional training to practice reflexology. This instructor has told her students that is not the case. I calledthe Dept. of Professional Regulation and they stated you MUST be an L.M.T. to practice.

On your website I see that there was a cease and desist order that was NOT upheld in this state. Could you please give me some more info on that or tell me whereI can find some? We have already decided not to continue with these seminars because the woman was giving a "certification" for a mear 4-8 hours of training. This information is more for our future offerings.

The law did not pass which would change all this. The law remains that you must first obtain a massage license unless, of course, you a cosmotologist. They are exempted from most massage laws. (ironic twist-because of this we were banned from practice for five years while my barber with no training was qualified )

The rescinded cease and desist order was from the International Institute of Reflexology. 813-343-4811. One of their reflexology instructors was served.

There may be a law but no means to enforce it. This is frequently the case.

When researching reflexology in the Medline database use the term "reflexotherapy". It has to do with the Library of Congress designation. If that doesn't work I can give you the source code or a fax for the author.
